No Luck Needed, Comets Beat Irish on the Road
WASHINGTON, IL - The Comets boys basketball teams made their first road game of the season count Thursday night, rolling into Washington and sweeping St. Patrick’s in a pair of strong performances that kept both squads unbeaten.
In the 7th grade game, the Comets pulled away in the second half for a 25–10 win after holding a narrow 10–8 lead at halftime. The defense locked in down the stretch, shutting out the Irish in the fourth quarter and dominating the glass with a 24–13 rebounding edge.
Mason Mohning led the way with 12 points on an efficient 6-for-10 shooting night. Cam Frakes filled the stat sheet with 4 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals, while Nick Lynch added 6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Oscar Ayoub chipped in 2 points, and Josh Braet added 1.
The 8th grade Comets followed with a 36–27 win, controlling the tempo from start to finish. St. Thomas led 14–11 at halftime, and never looked back—shooting a sharp 50% from the field while out-rebounding St. Patrick’s 18–7.
Cruz Madrigal turned in another strong all-around game, finishing with 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting along with 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Bryan Le added 6 points and tied Madrigal for a team-high 4 assists. Colten Kepple scored 5, Caleb Whitten 4, Caden Atkins 2, and Paul Schramm 2.
Both Comet squads now sit at 3–0 to open the season. They’ll look to keep their hot start going on Monday, November 10th, when they return home for Pack the Gym Night at St. Thomas. All four Comet teams, 5th through 8th grade, will take the court in a jam packed evening of basketball in Peoria Heights.
