Comets Launch Season with Back-to-Back Wins
PEORIA HEIGHTS — The St. Thomas Comets tipped off their basketball season on a strong note Saturday, as both the 7th and 8th grade teams earned home victories over the Roanoke-Benson Rockets.
The 7th-grade Comets held off a late surge to win 30–26, using balanced scoring and steady defense to control the game from start to finish. Nick Lynch led St. Thomas with 10 points, including two three-pointers. Cam Frakes added 8 points, while Leo Schendl scored 5. Mason Mohning and Harry Koszuta chipped in 4 and 3, respectively. The Comets outscored the Rockets in three of four quarters, building just enough cushion to withstand a late push from Roanoke-Benson.
In the 8th grade game, St. Thomas followed with a 35–31 win behind a dominant performance from Cruz Madrigal, who poured in 27 points and added 7 rebounds, 6 steals, 2 assists, and a block. Bryan Le contributed 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Jax Cowan hit a key three-pointer. Colton Kepple led the team with 4 assists and also had 3 steals, while Caleb Whitten grabbed 4 rebounds as the Comets maintained control despite a late Rockets rally.
The sweep gives both Comet squads early momentum to start their seasons. The 7th and 8th grade teams return to action at home on Monday, November 3, when they host Brimfield Grade School.
